The Remembrance Museum of the Land of Oświęcim invites you to another event in its History Encounter series. This time, participants will explore the streets of the Chemików housing estate in Oświęcim and discover the stories behind many of its fascinating places.
The walk will be led by a guide who will share the history of the area and explain the origins of some of its most distinctive local names. The tour will begin in the part of the city where, during the German occupation, apartment buildings were constructed for employees of IG Farben. As we continue through the neighborhood known locally as Pekin (“Beijing”), we will visit places known as Big Berlin, Little Berlin, and Vietnam, before concluding our historical journey in Oświęcim’s own Manhattan.
In addition to learning about these uniquely named locations, participants will also have the opportunity to revisit memories of other well-known places that were once part of everyday life in the neighborhood, including such iconic venues as Poziomka, Teatralna, and the Iwonka store. The walk will be led by Piotr Tarczyński, a licensed guide in Oświęcim.
