On September 11, 2025, at 17:00, the Remembrance Museum of the Land of Oświęcim Residents will host another event in the “Meeting with History” series, entitled “The Wartime Fates of Oświęcim Families.” The guest of the evening will be Oświęcim resident Mr. Piotr Dylik – author of the book “The Black Suitcase. About What Survived from 8–12 Głęboka Street in Oświęcim,” published this year by the Museum.

The Wartime Fates of Oświęcim Families – Meeting with History

September is the month when the museum traditionally marks the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II by organizing events dedicated to this subject. It is a time of special reflection on the past and remembrance of the residents of Oświęcim and surrounding towns whose lives were scarred by the tragedy of war.

The Black Suitcase – the story of the Bromowicz, Dylik, and Pomietlarz families

Piotr Dylik’s publication is an extraordinary journey through the history of the Bromowicz, Dylik, and Pomietlarz families, who once lived in a house on the former Głęboka Street (today Górnickiego). The story begins with the contents of a black suitcase that belonged to the author’s mother. It contained documents, photographs, and memorabilia that inspired the creation of a family chronicle covering the period from the mid-19th century up until 1974, when the family home was demolished.

War and occupation in family memory

The book presents both everyday life in Oświęcim over the past decades and dramatic memories of wartime. A particularly important part of the book is the one covering the Dylik family members’ underground resistance activity during the German occupation. This topic will form the central focus of the September meeting.

Presentation of unique memorabilia

The conversation with the author will be led by a museum assistant from the Historical Department of the Museum. The event will also feature a special presentation: copies of unique photographs and documents — family memorabilia from the black suitcase — which will be shown to the public for the first time.

Meeting with the author and registration

The meeting with Piotr Dylik is a unique opportunity to meet the author of a truly valuable book, “The Black Suitcase.” With great sensitivity, he recalls the history of his family and the residents of Oświęcim. His story shows that the past remains alive thanks to people who want to talk about it and share it with others.

We cordially invite you.

Admission is free.
