On the 1st September 1939, 80 years ago today, the Second World War broke out. Today, all over Poland commemorations are taking place to remember this tragic event which deeply affected our country. To remember those events, commemorations took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 12pm. Director Dorota Mleczko represented the Land of Oświęcim Residents’ Memory Museum.
At precisely midday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Kościuszki Square, delegations of local government authorities, institutions and companies laid flowers and lit candles. Local residents also paid their respects along with colour parties and combatants’ organisations.
Further commemorations took place at the monument to the Fallen Soldiers of Poland 1914- 1918, 1918- 1921, 1939- 1945 and the Fallen in Defence of Oświęcim in September 1939.
