The Remembrance Museum of Land of Oświęcim Residents invites you to a popular-scientific conference dedicated to the outstanding artist Awit Szubert on 18th April.

Due to the places and forms of his creative activities and experiments, Awit Szubert is better known in Krakow, Wieliczka, Zakopane and Szczawnica than in his hometown. Called the court photographer of the Tatra Mountains, he was also one of the pioneers of Krakow photography. He was the first ever to take pictures of the underground interiors of the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

Awit Szubert was born in Oświęcim on 3rd July 1837. He attended middle school and a drawing and painting school in Krakow. He continued his study of painting in Rome with his brother Leon. After the outbreak of the January Uprising in 1863, he joined the insurgents. After the fall of the uprising, he settled in Oświęcim and opened a photographic studio here in 1864. Three years later he moved the studio to Krakow. Here he collaborated with prominent Krakow artists, making reproductions of works by Artur Grottger, Juliusz Kossak, Henryk Siemiradzki and, above all, Jan Matejko. He won medals for his photographic work: at the Vienna Universal Exhibition (1873), at the Brussels Exhibition of Photography (1874), at the Vienna Exhibition (1875), at the Lviv National Exhibition (1877) and at the Paris Universal Exhibition (1878).

He died in Szczawnica on 27th May 1919 and was buried there. His mother Barbara, father Antoni and brother Leon are buried in the parish cemetery in Oświęcim.
