This is the title of a popular-science conference organized by the Remembrance Museum of Land of Oświęcim Residents on 5th September 2022.

This issue is little known and little popularized, yet it is an extremely important part of the history of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp and the people living on the Land of Oświęcim.

“It was the residents of Oświęcim and the area surrounding the camp who tried in every way to help KL Auschwitz prisoners. These efforts, as it turns out, did not stop after 27th January 1945 and the liberation of the camp. As the Remembrance Museum, we want to show this aid, emphasizing its post-war forms during the conference,” says curator Zbigniew Mazur.

A popular-science conference

Starting at 10 am in the conference room of the Remembrance Museum, scholars will speak about the situation of children during the occupation and after the war. The introductory lecture will be given by Prof. Jacek Chrobaczynski – historian, university lecturer, researcher of the history of World War II. The topic of his deliberations is “War and the Child (1939-1945). Everyday life – morality – education and upbringing. Balance and consequences”. The second lecture will refer to the locality and will look at “The fate of children from Auschwitz and their adoptions by residents of the Oświęcim area.” The speaker will be Teresa Wontor-Cichy – historian, researcher at the Research Center of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim.

The second part of the conference will present the fate of eyewitnesses to history who were imprisoned in KL Auschwitz as children.
