How do museum activities differ from a traditional classroom lesson? Is museum education about presenting a ready-made story about heritage, or building a friendly place to co-create this story? What can happen when we let young people behind the scenes? – You are invited to listen as we try to answer these questions on 7th March 2023 during the conference “The role of museum education in preserving the heritage of memory”.

Representatives of school authorities, headteachers, teachers of elementary and secondary schools from the Małopolska county (Lesser Poland) and all those interested in the subject of museum education as a form of extracurricular education are invited to participate in the conference organized by the Remembrance Museum, the Małopolska Teacher Training Centre (Pol: MDCN) and the St. Maximilian Center in Harmęże.

Invitations to participate in the conference were accepted by experts in the field of museology.

Marta Graczyńska, acting on behalf of the Director for Educational Activities of the Royal Castle on Wawel – State Art Collections, will deliver a lecture “Museums in the post-pandemic world of the 21st century. Trouble or Hope?”.

Beata Grochowska, senior curator, head of the Educational Department at the Silesian Museum in Katowice, will talk about what a lesson in a museum looks like through the eyes of a practitioner.

Jagoda Gumińska-Oleksy, staff member at the Education Department of the National Museum in Krakow, will present a lecture on “Draught in the museum, or the power of co-creation.”

Good practices on education at the site of remembrance on the example of the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the People’s Republic of Poland at 37 Rakowiecka Street in Warsaw will be shared by Dr. Filip Musiał, professor of the AIK, director of the Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance in Cracow and director of this Museum.

The event opens the project entitled “Academy of the Legacy of Remembrance,” addressed to secondary and tertiary level teachers. The premise of the Academy is that those participating in the project should identify with the history of the place where they live and relate to it in their educational experience. We also want teachers and, consequently, students to develop the habit of using the museum’s rich offer, thus learning to interact with culture and memory heritage. The schedule of meetings within the framework of the Memorial Heritage Academy can be found on the websites of the Remembrance Museum and MCDN.

The conference is held under the honorary patronage of Barbara Nowak – Małopolska Superintendent of Education.

The conference will be held in a hybrid formula: at the Remembrance Museum in Oświęcim and via Microsoft Teams.

Please regsiter, regardless of the form of participation (in person, online), through the electronic Training Reservation System available on the website: www.mcdn.edu.pl
